Serving Size: 8

  • 10-12 apples (mix of tart and sweet apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 cup brown sugar

  1. Wash and roughly chop the apples, including the peels and cores.
  2. Add the sliced orange to the chopped apples. Tie the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves in a cheesecloth or place them in a spice bag.
  3. Place the chopped apples, orange slices, and the bundled spices in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally.
  4. Mash the softened apples with a potato masher or the back of a spoon to release more flavor. Let the cider continue to simmer for another 1-2 hours. Once the apples are thoroughly cooked, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into another pot or large bowl. Press the solids to extract as much liquid as possible.
  5. Return the strained liquid to the heat and stir in brown sugar. Adjust the sweetness according to your taste preference. Allow it to simmer for an additional 15-20 minutes to let the flavors meld.
